Six more dengue deaths as yearly toll tops 200 in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has reported six more dengue deaths in a 24-hour count, while 1,868 new patients have been admitted to hospitals with the mosquito-borne disease.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest deaths have taken the country's dengue toll this year to 201.

September has seen the highest number of dengue deaths this year, with 104 fatalities so far.

Of the new hospital admissions, 173 were reported in hospitals in Dhaka North City Corporation and 179 in Dhaka South. Another 405 patients were admitted to hospitals elsewhere in Dhaka Division.

In other divisions, hospitals admitted 178 patients in Barishal, 317 in Chattogram, 280 in Khulna, 113 in Mymensingh, 156 in Rajshahi, 59 in Rangpur, and eight in Sylhet.

A total of 1,557 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals across the country in the past 24 hours, according to the DGHS bulletin.

So far this year, 67,367 people have been hospitalised with dengue and 62,117 have been discharged. The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000. The highest number of cases was recorded in 2023, when 321,179 people were hospitalised and 1,705 died. More than 400 people died of dengue last year, while around 102,000 cases were recorded.
