The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for individual taxpayers for the 2025-26 fiscal year by one month to Dec 31.

Previously, the deadline for filing returns was Nov 30.

The NBR extended the deadline in an order on Sunday.

At the same time, the tax collection agency issued another order allowing anyone who is unable to file income tax returns online to apply to the excise commissioner by December 15.

From this tax year, it is mandatory to file tax returns online.

However, this provision has been relaxed in the case of senior taxpayers aged 65 years or above, those taxpayers with physical disabilities or special needs, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, returns filed by legal representatives on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.

These taxpayers can still file e-returns if they wish to do so.

Authorised representatives can also file e-returns online this year. In addition, in the case of Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, although they are not required to file returns online, they can file e-returns while abroad by using their passport number, national identity card number, e-mail address, and other details.

Returns are filed online without uploading any papers or documents. Taxpayers receive an automatic e-return filing acknowledgment immediately after paying their income tax through any banking service or mobile financial services.

Previously, the NBR had set up a call centre to provide assistance to taxpayers who had any problems related to e-returns. Taxpayers can get immediate solutions to their e-return-related questions over the phone by calling 09643 71 71 71.

In addition, solutions are also being provided at e-return help-desks in all tax regions across the country.

As of Sunday, more than 1.8 million individual taxpayers have filed their e-returns online this year. Last year, on Nov 17, the NBR had issued an order to extend the deadline by a month. Till that date, the number of e-returns filed was 375,000.

Later, the deadline was extended several times, and the deadline for filing returns for individual taxpayers for the 2024-25 tax year eventually fell on Feb 15 this year.
