Though one Tiger has returned to the pavilion, another has stepped up to carry on Bangladesh’s innings.
Litton Das scored his fifth Test century in the Mirpur Test against Ireland on Thursday, reinvigorating his side after the loss of Mushfiqur Rahim early in the day.
Despite a solid start, Bangladesh were at one point at 95-3 on Wednesday after some quick losses to Irish off-breaker Andy McBrine.
But veterans Mushfiqur and Mominul Haque (63) steadied the innings, putting up a partnership of 107 runs off 214 balls.
When Mominul fell to McBrine too, Mushfiqur continued to prove his grit and determination. Joined at the crease by Litton, who proved an able partner, they took the Tigers to 292/4 at the end of play on Day 1. But supporters were left on tenterhooks as Mushfiqur stood at 99*.
He was eventually was able to complete his century early on Thursday. However, an outside edge off a delivery from slow left-armer Matthew Humphreys closed out his innings at 106.
Litton, however, has carried on with new partner Mehidy Hasan Miraz at the crease. At the end of 118 overs, Bangladesh stood at 384/5 with Litton on 102* and Miraz on 28*.
