Australia thrashed South Africa by 276 runs in the third ODI in Mackay, securing a consolation victory to avoid a whitewash in their backyard by completing their second-biggest win in the format.

Centuries from Travis Head (142), Mitchell Marsh (100), and a maiden ODI ton from Cameron Green (118) lifted Australia to a staggering 431 for 2, their second-highest total ever.

Alex Carey contributed an unbeaten 50, forming a rapid 164-run stand with Green in just 13.3 overs.

In reply, the Proteas collapsed to 155 all out in 24.5 overs under the lights.

Dewald Brevis (49) top-scored for the visitors, but their batting crumbled against the Aussie seamers and spinners.

Twenty-two-year-old Cooper Connolly claimed 5 for 22 – the youngest to claim a 5-wicket haul for the Baggy Greens and the best by an Aussie spinner in the format.

The series ended 2-1 to South Africa, after the Proteas won the previous games in convincing fashion, batting first.
