Rajshahi, Jul 16 (bdnews24.com)—The Rajshahi University (RU) Syndicate has launched an investigation into the incident of gunfight between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) factions that left a university student dead on Monday.
A five-strong committee headed Prof Golam Kabir of Botany Department has been formed, Professor Muhammad Nurullah, Syndicate member and also Pro-Vice Chancellor, told bdnews24.com.
The other members of the committee are Prof Biswajit Chandra, Prof Zafor Sadique, Rustom Ali and Prof Munshi Manjurul Haque.
The committee has been asked to submit a report within 15 days, he added.
RU authorities convened an emergency meeting of the Syndicate, the highest decision-making body at the public university, on Monday evening, hours after the violence broke out.
After the meeting, Prof Nurullah said the Syndicate had expressed grief over the death of the student.
Abdullah Al Hasan alias Sohel Rana died in the afternoon at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) after he had been bullet-hit during the clash. Rana was a final-year student of social science department and a leader of Chhatra League at Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq Hall.
BCL leaders said though there was a dispute after formation of a full-fledged committee, the two factions of the university unit of BCL engaged in gunfight at the campus on early on Monday over raising funds for the construction of the Padma bridge.
"Police calmed the situation on being informed of the incident," Matihar Police Station Ofiicer-in-Charge Anisur Rahman said.
"Police then raided the Madar Bakhsh Hall and Suhrawardi Hall from 2:30am to dawn," he added.
The police official, however, said police had not to recover any weapon or arrest someone yet over the issue.
"After the incident, the university unit of Chhatra League recommended expulsion of eight of its activists," Chhatra League Central Office Secretary Sheikh Russel told bdnews24.com.
"But the Central Committee is yet to give any decision on the expulsion," he added.
The Chhatra League activists facing the threat of expulsion are the university chapter's Organising Secretary Touhid Al Tuhin, Vice-Presidents AKheruzzaman Takim and Tajmahal Hiro, Publicity Secretary Anjir Liton, Deputy Office Secretary Atikur Rahman Atik, Deputy Library Secretaries Nazim Ahmed Setu, Tanim Ahmed and Koushik Hossain
