M Tamim, a distinguished professor of petroleum and mineral resources engineering, has joined the Independent University, Bangladesh, or IUB, as its vice-chancellor.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed Tamim to the post in a circular issued by the Ministry of Education on Dec 17, 2024.
Before joining IUB, he served as a professor of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Engineering and dean of the Faculty of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, or BUET.
Tamim earned his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from BUET, completed his Master's degree at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and obtained his PhD in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada.
His research has delved into reservoir engineering, energy economics, regulation and planning, development and application of numerical and analytical computer models, and reservoir management. He has also done extensive work on greenhouse gas mitigation, energy efficiency improvements, and energy-related environmental solutions.
Tamim has also held various positions relating to energy policy formulation, planning, and regulation under successive governments, even taking charge of the Ministry of Power and Energy under the caretaker government in 2008. He also served as the pro-vice chancellor of BRAC University from 2019 to 2020.
He is a member and the founding chairperson of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Bangladesh Section, and a life fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
