IUB graduate Sefatul Wasi awarded HUMAP research scholarship in Japan

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) Computer Science graduate Sefatul Wasi has been selected for the 2026 Hyogo University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (HUMAP) Scholarship for a research exchange in Japan.

He became the fourth IUB student and the first graduate to receive the award, according to a media statement from the university.

Wasi will undertake a one-academic-year research exchange at the University of Hyogo in Japan from autumn 2026.

His selection was confirmed on Jul 6 under a 2023 memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two universities aimed at promoting research collaboration and academic mobility.

He will research improving fracture detection from pelvic X-ray images under the supervision of Prof Syoji Kobashi at the University of Hyogo.

At IUB, his research is supervised by Associate Prof Saadia Binte Alam and Assistant Prof Md Rashedur Rahman.

Wasi is currently a Research and Development Officer in IUB's Department of Computer Science and Engineering and works with the Medical Imaging Research and Analysis (MIRA) Wing of the Centre for Computational and Data Sciences.

He completed his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science in 2023 and is expected to finish his MSc in Summer 2026.

The previous IUB recipients of the HUMAP scholarship were Nushrat Afroz Roza (2023), Siam Tahsin Bhuiyan (2024) and Zayan Zaman (2025).

The scholarship covers the cost of the exchange programme and provides a monthly stipend, the statement read.
