The Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) and Hall Union elections have opened, and 28 candidates have collected nomination forms on the first day.
Of them, 26 are opting for the CUCSU election and two for the Hall Union polls.
On Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Prof Monir Uddin said there was a "high level of enthusiasm" among students for the CUCSU election.
He said the number of nomination forms sold on the first day was “unexpectedly high”.
“We are seeing a positive election atmosphere.”
Prof Monir said candidates do not need to specify the position they are running for when collecting nomination forms. The positions will be disclosed after the forms are submitted.
The distribution of nomination forms began at the Election Commission’s office in the CUCSU building.
According to Prof Monir, candidates can collect nomination forms for 26 positions in CUCSU and 15 positions in the Hall Union.
The first nomination form on the opening day was collected by Taebul Alam Faraji, a student from Shahjalal Hall, for the post of sports secretary.
Nomination collection and submission will continue until 3:30pm on Wednesday.
The CUCSU election, scheduled for Oct 12, will be held after 35 years. Although there have been discussions about the election in previous years, it was not organised until recently.
Following the July Uprising on Aug 5 last year, calls for student union elections at public universities, including Chattogram University, gained momentum.
The election schedule was announced on Aug 28, with the last CUCSU election held on Feb 8, 1990.
Chittagong University has 14 halls and one hostel, with five female halls and 10 male halls. The university’s 49 departments and five institutes have 27,634 students, whose list has been published on the CUCSU election website, though hall-based lists are still pending.
According to the election schedule, the preliminary list of candidates will be announced on Sept 21, with the final list published on Sept 25.
Nominations can be withdrawn by Sept 23, and objections to candidates will be resolved the following day.
Candidates can campaign from the release of the final candidate list until 24 hours before voting, with campaigning allowed from 10am to 10pm.
The CUCSU election will have 26 positions, including 21 secretarial posts and five executive member positions.
