To pacify the students, BUET authorities have made a temporary roundabout at the Palashi intersection to avoid accidents and traffic congestion.
Police said Anika Tasnim, 22, a third year student of architecture at the engineering university, was hit by a microbus at Palashi in the morning while coming to the campus in a rickshaw.
Fellow students rushed her to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
DMCH police outpost Inspector Mozammel Haque said Tasnim had suffered a waist injury.
Agitated students of the premier engineering university took to the street in protest, demanding immediate construction of a roundabout to regulate traffic.
Lalbagh zone's Additional Deputy Commissioner Abida Sultana said several hundred students had joined the demonstration, causing massive traffic congestion in the area.
BUET Vice-Chancellor Prof SM Nazrul Islam assured the students around noon that their demand would be met.
"A temporary roundabout will be constructed here for now," he said. "A permanent one will be built later."
He also assured the students of widening streets around the university.
