A delegation from American International University, Bangladesh (AIUB) has taken part in an international renewable energy training programme in Italy’s Milan.

The delegation participated in the second international training on "Smart Renewable Energy" hosted by Politecnico di Milano, a public technical university under the SOHO Erasmus+ Project, AIUB said a media statement.

The five-day event was organised as part of the project's capacity-building activities and brought together participants from partner institutions in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Vietnam and Europe.

The AIUB SOHO team was led by Prof Dr Md Abdur Rahman, pro-vice-chancellor of AIUB.

The delegation also included Md Saniat Rahman Zishan, director of the Faculty of Engineering, Abir Ahmed, special assistant; Chowdhury Akram Hossain, head of the Department of Computer Engineering.

The programme aimed to “strengthen technical knowledge and practical competencies in renewable energy technologies, particularly photovoltaic (PV) systems, while promoting academic exchange and international collaboration”.

It featured lectures, laboratory sessions, practical exercises and group activities conducted by faculty members and researchers from Politecnico di Milano.

The training began with an introductory session on electrical quantities conducted by Dr Alessandro Niccolai, who introduced participants to the fundamental electrical concepts required to understand renewable energy systems.

Prof Sonia Leva then delivered a lecture on photovoltaic systems, covering solar energy technologies, PV system components, operating principles and the growing contribution of photovoltaic energy to global sustainability goals.

The theoretical sessions were complemented by practical training at the SolarTechLab, where Alejandro González Moreno guided participants through laboratory equipment, photovoltaic modules, measurement instruments and experimental procedures related to solar energy technologies.

Prof Dr Emanuele Giovanni Carlo Ogliari led sessions on photovoltaic system performance analysis and preliminary PV system design.

Dr Nicoletta Matera discussed methods for the economic assessment of photovoltaic systems, including investment analysis, cost-benefit assessment and economic feasibility studies.

Michael Wood conducted a practical session on estimating photovoltaic energy production using open-access tools, enabling participants to assess the energy generation potential of solar installations based on geographical and environmental conditions.

The delegation also visited the Sustainable Simulation Lab at the Milan university under the guidance of Prof Michela Longo and her research team.

At the end of the programme, Politecnico di Milano hosted a dinner attended by Dr Vladimir Tanasiev, coordinator of the SOHO Erasmus+ Project.

AIUB said the delegation's participation reflected the university's “commitment to internationalisation, academic excellence and the promotion of sustainable technologies through global academic collaboration”.
