A ship from Myanmar carrying 22,000 tonnes of sun-dried rice has docked at the Chattogram Port.
The ship, the MV Golden Star, docked at Jetty No. 9 around 12:30pm on Friday as part of the first phase of a rice import scheme by the interim government.
The ship came to Chattogram from Myanmar’s Yangon.
Gyanpriyo Bidurshu Chakma, controller of movement and storage at the Directorate General of Food in Chattogram said the ship would start offloading the rice at 5pm.
“As part of the G2G programme of importing 100,000 sun-dried rice from Myanmar, the consignment of 22,000 tonnes arrived in the first phase. The rest will arrive later,” the officer said.
This is the first consignment of rice imported from Myanmar since the interim government took power following the ousting of the Awami league in the face of a mass uprising on Aug 5.
On Jan 12, 26,935 tonnes of parboiled rice were imported from India. An additional 24,690 tonnes of parboiled rice had been imported from India on Dec 25 as well.
