Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital Director Brig Gen Mahbubul Haque told reporters that the wounds on Prof Iqbal’s head seemed to be from an iron rod.
He said Prof Iqbal needed 25 to 26 stitches. “Now he is out of danger,” he added.
Prof Iqbal was taken to Osmani Medical College after the attack during a programme around 5:50pm.
Around 9:45pm, he was taken to Sylhet Airport from where he was being airlifted to Dhaka.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered the officials to bring Prof Iqbal to Dhaka by air-ambulance, her Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim has told bdnews24.com earlier in the evening.
He would be admitted to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka, Dr Ehteshamul Hoque Dulal, an additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services, said.
