Zafar Iqbal hit on head, stabbed in back and left hand, doctor says

Doctors have found four wounds on the head of Prof Zafar Iqbal and knife injuries in the back and left arm from the attack he sustained on Shahjalal University of Science and Technology or SUST campus.

Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital Director Brig Gen Mahbubul Haque told reporters that the wounds on Prof Iqbal’s head seemed to be from an iron rod.

He said Prof Iqbal needed 25 to 26 stitches. “Now he is out of danger,” he added.

Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is being taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital after he was stabbed during a programme on Shahjalal University of Science and Technology campus on Saturday.

The 64-year-old writer-teacher also suffered knife injuries on his back and left hand in the attack in Sylhet on Saturday. He was under police guard when the assailants carried out the attack.

Prof Iqbal was taken to Osmani Medical College after the attack during a programme around 5:50pm.

Around 9:45pm, he was taken to Sylhet Airport from where he was being airlifted to Dhaka. 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered the officials to bring Prof Iqbal to Dhaka by air-ambulance, her Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim has told bdnews24.com earlier in the evening.

He would be admitted to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka, Dr Ehteshamul Hoque Dulal, an additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services, said.
