The government has raised fares for diesel-powered buses and minibuses by Tk 0.17 per kilometre on routes across Bangladesh, including Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas.
The Road Transport and Highways Division issued a gazette notification on Tuesday through the BRTA Establishment Branch, revising the fares with effect from Sept 22.
The division made the notification public on Wednesday.
Under the revised rates, the fare for buses operating in the Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas has been raised from Tk 2.53 to Tk 2.70 per kilometre.
For buses and minibuses operating on inter-district and long-distance routes, the fare has increased from Tk 2.23 to Tk 2.40 per kilometre.
The fare for minibuses in Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas has also been raised by Tk 0.17, from Tk 2.43 to Tk 2.60 per kilometre.
The same rate applies to buses and minibuses operating on internal routes in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Narsingdi, Gazipur and Manikganj districts under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority.
The minimum fare has been set at Tk 10 for buses and Tk 8 for minibuses operating in the Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas.
The notification said the fares were revised after taking into consideration the increase in diesel prices and current operating costs.
The new rates, however, do not apply to gas-powered buses and minibuses.
Transport operators have been instructed to display the revised fare chart at a visible location inside every bus and minibus.
The notification also said that if the number of authorised seats in a bus or minibus is reduced and the seating arrangement is changed to provide a more comfortable journey, the fare must be revised proportionately.
Such changes will require approval from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority or the relevant passenger and goods transport committee, it said.
The new notification repeals all previous notifications and orders issued on fares for diesel-powered buses and minibuses.
