Detectives have sought permission to interrogate Obaidur Rahman, the maternal uncle of Mariam Khatun, the second wife of MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, for five days in a case filed over her alleged abetment to suicide.
Inspector Mohammad Salauddin of Detective Branch’s Tejgaon Zonal Team filed the remand petition on Monday.
On Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam set Oct 1 for a hearing in the presence of the suspect, said Rafiqul Islam, a sub-inspector of the prosecution department.
The petition said evidence had emerged linking Obaidur to Mariam’s death.
The investigation found that Obaidur had been involved with Nazrul even before Mariam’s marriage to the MP and had taken part in different activities related to their marriage, it said.
The DB inspector sought Obaidur’s remand citing the same five reasons that police had given when seeking remand for MP Nazrul and his first wife Maksuda Islam.
The reasons include determining whether the suspects named in the case were present at the home when Mariam died by hanging and whether they had any influence on her “suicide”.
The investigators also want to establish the role of the suspects in allegedly abetting, provoking or putting Mariam under mental pressure, threatening her or otherwise helping her take her own life.
On the evening of Sept 20, police recovered the hanging body of Mariam, Nazrul Islam’s second wife, from a flat at the NAM Bhaban opposite the parliament complex.
That night, police took Nazrul and his first wife Maktuda into custody.
Mariam’s father SM Masum Billah filed a case that night accusing Nazrul, Maktuda and Obaidur of abetting her suicide.
The following day, a court granted police four days’ remand for Nazrul and one day for Maktuda in the case.
The investigation was handed over to the DB that night.
On Sept 24, police secured another four days’ remand for Nazrul.
Meanwhile, Obaidur was arrested in Chattogram by the Special Response Battalion on the night of Sept 22.
He was sent to jail the following day.
