Police have recovered a suspicious device made up of petrol-filled bottles, iron pipes and electric wire from beside the entrance to the shrine of Baul saint Lalon Shah in Kushtia’s Kumarkhali.
The device was found near a coconut tree on the right side of the entrance around 1am on Monday, said Jamal Uddin, chief of Kumarkhali Police Station.
Police said officers from the station went to the scene after learning of a suspicious bag at the location. Devotees visiting the shrine were moved away for their safety.
Four members of a bomb disposal and explosives expert team from the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police later went to the spot.
Led by Police Inspector Modassher Kaiser, the team searched the area and recovered two one-litre bottles of petrol, two iron pipes half an inch wide and four inches long, and a device fitted with electric wire.
“A team left from here for Kushtia at 3am. They have not returned yet,” a senior officer of the bomb disposal unit told bdnews24.com.
“It is not possible to say for certain what kind of device has been recovered or how powerful it is,” the officer said.
