The former singer and bass guitarist of popular band Miles will receive the backing Nationalist Democratic Movement led by of Bobby Hajjaj.
Ahmed, the son of singer Feroza Begum and composer Kamal Das Gupta, announced his candidacy at a press conference at the National Press Club on Monday. Though he will be running as an independent candidate, Ahmed is a ranking member of the NDM Council.
The party’s chairman, Bobby Hajjaj, is the son of controversial businessman Moosa Bin Shamsher and a former advisor to Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad.
Ahmed did not speak during the press conference. Instead Hajjaj read out a prepared statement on his candidacy on behalf of the party.
“We do not want the kind of politics that puts a person or a family in power. We do not want a shameless struggle for power, or one person to dominate, or political dynasties. We want to see a government made of representatives elected by the people.”
Hajjaj said the NDM had applied to get registered with the Election Commission on Oct 30, which means the party will not able to field a candidate officially, but would be supporting Ahmed.
While serving as an adviser to Ershad, in 2015, Hajjaj filed his nomination for mayoral race, but withdrew soon afterwards.
In April this year, he announced the formation of the NDM and Shafin Ahmed is a part of it from the beginning.
Speaking to bdnews24.com over phone after Tuesday’s media call, Shafin said, “The party is backing my candidacy. As it has considered me for this important duty I will do my utmost.”
