Bangladesh’s second International Crimes Tribunal gave the order on Sunday, nearly six months after the top Jamaat-e-Islami leader’s case was wrapped up.

Imran H Sarkar, spokesperson for the Mancha, a platform that came into being in 2013 demanding the maximum penalty for war criminals, said people wanted death for them.

“We’ve got the verdict we hoped for. We’re also telling the government and all concerned to prevent the Jamaat and (Islami Chhatra) Shibir from indulging in violence during their strike.”

Sarkar then headed a rally out of Shahbagh to celebrate the verdict.

Mir Quasem, executive council member and a top financier of Jamaat, he was found guilty beyond doubt on eight charges of torture and partially on charges 11 and 12 for murder.

He was sentenced to hang until death on the two charges of killing eight, including young freedom fighter ‘Jashim’, Tuntun Sen and Ranajit Das.

Supporters of the Ganajagaran Mancha gathered at Shahbagh, chanting slogans on Sunday morning.

The Mancha’s ‘faction’ headed by Imran H Sarkar was positioned between the two entrances to the National Museum.

The other, headed by Kamal Pasha Chowdhury, had assembled at a crossing next to the museum.
