May 21 (BDNEWS) – BNP and Jamaat backed teachers in Rajshahi University have intensified their lobbying regarding the appointment of the next Vice Chancellor of the University.
Reliable sources said that a list comprised of five names has been sent to the highest level of the government for the appointment of the next VC of Rajshahi University.
The names of the five candidates are - acting Pro VC Prof Aminul Islam, Prof Korban Ali and Abdur Razzak of Statistics Department, Prof Altaf Hossain and Abdus Salam of Zoology Department.
All of them except Altaf Hossain are directly or indirectly involved with the activities of Jamaat on the University campus.
All the concerned including Rajshahi administration was stirred when they came to know that the government had been contemplating to appoint a new VC for the University.
The teachers who believe in Islamic values and Bangladeshi nationalism (White panel) held an emergency meeting on May 19 in this regard. Abdus Salam Bhuiyan presided over the meeting.
The teachers decided to request the Prime Minister to let the acting VC to complete his tenure and sent an application in this regard.
Convenor of White Panel Salam Bhuiyan said since the acting VC has been successfully performing his duty, there is no need to appoint a new VC in his place.
He also said that they have no objection if a new VC is appointed through VC panel.
Rajshahi University Teachers' Association President Nazrul Islam said that the authorities should let the acting VC to complete his tenure.
Sources said that the Jamaat backed teachers have been lobbying high ups of the government in this regard.
A group of Jamaat backed teachers of Rajshahi University met Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Industries minister Motiur Rahman Nizami at the Circuit House when he went to Rajshahi on May 13 and told him there was strong possibility of a pro-Jamaat backed teacher being appointed as the new VC.
In this regard Rajshahi Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu said that the authorities should let the acting VC to complete his tenure to ensure the stability on the campus.
Former VC Dr Saidur Rahman Khan said that the VC should be appointed through a systematic way.
If Vice Chancellor is appointed through senate by forming a panel following the act of '73 the status of University as an autonomous organisation can be upheld, he added.
Acting Vice Chancellor Dr Faisul Islam Faruqui said that though he heard rumours regarding the appointment of a new VC he was not officially informed in this regard.
