A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has moved northwest and intensified into a deep depression.
According to a special bulletin issued Tuesday night, the system was centred over the west-central Bay and adjoining northwest Bay after intensifying.
Meteorologist Khandaker Hafizur Rahman told bdnews24.com, “It is not likely to develop into a cyclone for now. However, its influence may bring rain to the southern and southwestern parts of the country.”
At 9pm, the deep depression was 875km southwest of Chattogram, 850km southwest of Cox’s Bazar, 695km southwest of Mongla and 720km southwest of Payra.
It may move further west and northwest, crossing India’s north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast by Wednesday midnight.
Gusty winds may affect sea ports, the north Bay and adjoining coastal areas.
Winds within 48km of its centre are reaching 50kmph, rising to 60kmph in gusts.
With rough seas near the centre, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports have been asked to keep local warning signal No. 3 hoisted.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and operate cautiously until further notice.
