Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has inaugurated a flood control and irrigation project in Feni to shield the district from devastating floods.

He unveiled the plaque, which names it the “Rehabilitation of Muhuri-Kahua Flood Control, Drainage and Irrigation Project (Phase 1)”, at Kheyaghat near Muhuri Bridge in Parshuram Upazila at 2:10pm on Thursday, driving straight from Dhaka.

He then planted a sapling at the site and launched a canal excavation programme.

Rafiqul Alam Maznu, the BNP lawmaker for Feni-1, welcomed the premier on his arrival.

Feni-2 MP Zainal Abedin, Feni-3 MP and Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, State Minister Forhad Hossain Azad, Housing Minister Zakaria Taher, Social Welfare State Minister Farzana Sharmin, women's seat MP Rehana Akhter Ranu and local leaders were also present.

Hilly runoff and floodwater from upstream India breach the Muhuri embankment every year, submerging vast areas and damaging homes, farmland, roads and other structures.

The government has now moved to build a permanent embankment to end the long-running misery.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project on Jun 16 at a cost of Tk 15.42 billion.

Officials of the Bangladesh Water Development Board say the work covers re-excavation of about 83.5km of rivers and water bodies, rehabilitation of about 68km of embankment, riverbank protection and repair of irrigation infrastructure.

Once completed, the project is likely to cut flood and erosion damage along the Muhuri, Kahua and Silonia rivers.

The prime minister will later address a rally of local villagers at the project site.
