Monday's regular Cabinet meeting, chaired by prime minister, agreed in principle to the Acts for the Bongomata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib University of Science and Technology in Jamalpur and the Sheikh Hasina University in Netrokona.

With them, the number of public universities in Bangladesh will stand at 38.

Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told the media that the Acts have been forwarded to the law ministry for vetting.

He said the Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Fisheries College at Jamalpur's Melandah Upazila will be turned into a university.

"Residents of Netrokona have long been cherishing for a university. The Sheikh Hasina University will fulfil their demand", said the Cabinet secretary.

He said the initial plan was to set up a science and technology university in Netrokona, but it was later revised to a 'general' university, offering courses in arts, commerce other than science.
