Acting army chief Lt Gen Anwar Hossain and air force chief Air Marshal Abu Esrar pinned the badge on him in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the office on Sunday.
The prime minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters on the event later.
The government appointed Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Nizamuddin Ahmed, a rear admiral then, as the chief of Bangladesh Navy in January.
He assumed office on Jan 27 after being promoted to vice admiral.
Ahmed joined the navy in 1979. He was commissioned in 1981 after his graduation from the Marshal Tito Naval Academy of former Yugoslavia.
He served as the Director of Personnel Services at the Naval Headquarters, the secretary to the navy chief; worked as an instructor at the Naval Academy and TAS School and as the Coast Guards director of operations.
Apart from commanding the navy’s all three Ex-RN frigates, Ahmed was also awarded the ‘Osamanyo Sheba Padak’ (OSP) by the prime minister for his exemplary service.
He was appointed CPA chairman in February 2012. The government also made him the chairman of the Patuakhali’s Payra Port Authority in November 2013.
Nizamuddin Ahmed also participated in a UN peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast.
