Osman appeared before the court of Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Jesmin Ara on Sunday and requested bail.

The magistrate set May 23 for the hearing of the bail petition, said state prosecutor Anwarul Kabir Babul.

A video of the May 13, 2016 incident showed MP Salim making Piyar Sattar Latif High School Headmaster Bhakta squat up and down holding his ears, alleged for blasphemy.

The Jatiya Party lawmaker faced intense public criticism and outrage after the video went viral on the social media.

It prompted thousands in Bangladesh to stage a unique protest by posting photos of themselves holding their ears and saying ‘Sorry Sir’.

Protests erupted across Bangladesh demanding the trial of Salim and his accomplices.

The High Court issued a suo moto order over the incident asking local authorities to investigate the matter, following which police filed a report describing the MP as 'innocent'.

The court then ordered a judicial investigation, rejecting ‘carelessly made’ reports by police and administration.

The High Court ordered to the hearings of the case to be held at a court in Dhaka after receiving the findings of the judicial inquiry in January this year.

The Dhaka court then summoned Salim Osman and Opu Prodhan to appear before the court on May 14.
