Man beaten to death in front of Dhaka’s Sakura bar

A man has been beaten to death in front of the Sakura Restaurant & Bar in Dhaka’s Shahbagh.

Police believe workers at the bar are responsible for the murder.

Thirty-five, including one of the bar’s managers, has been detained for questioning, said Dhaka Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain Sardar.

Police identified the victim as 32 year-old ‘Jonny’ from Mohammadpur. They have been unable to provide any additional details.

A group of men beat Jonny to death in front of the bar around midnight on Sunday, said Maruf Hossain Sardar.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by police, where doctors declared him dead.

“We have heard that a group of men from the bar charged at him and began to beat him,” the deputy commissioner said. “Something may have happened inside but we are unable to confirm it.”

The bar is temporarily closed under police orders.
