Karnaphuli becomes Bangladesh’s 490th Upazila

Karnaphuli, a police station area under Chittagong’s Patiya, has been upgraded to an Upazila.

It thus becomes the 490th Upazila in the country.

The National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR) approved the upgrade at a meeting held at the Secretariat on Monday, said Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam.

He said the population of the new Upazila, which comprised five of the 22 unions of Patiya Upazila, was 6.21 million.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the NICAR meeting.
