Tarique Rahman’s first trip to New York as prime minister was pitched as more than a UN appearance -- it was an opportunity to project Bangladesh’s democratic transition, national interests and ambitions on the world stage, Advisor Mahdi Amin has said.
Speaking at a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in Tejgaon on Wednesday, the prime minister’s advisor said the visit marked the return of a government chosen by the people to the global stage.
“After a long time, the head of a government elected by the people represented Bangladesh on the world stage. It was a powerful stride for democracy, and at every step the honourable prime minister ensured that ‘Bangladesh comes first’,” he said.
Tarique, he said, had protected the national interest in international forums and showcased Bangladesh’s democratic journey.
The prime minister travelled to New York on Sept 21 to attend the UN General Assembly for the first time since taking office.
He addressed the General Debate on Sept 24 and held meetings on the sidelines with heads of state and government, as well as senior representatives of companies and organisations.
Mahdi said Tarique had made clear that Bangladesh wanted partnerships, investment and trade with every country to strengthen self-reliance and ensure inclusive development.
“This is a firm resolve and belief to stand tall in global diplomacy,” he said, adding that Bangladesh had reached “a different level” internationally through equality and justice.
He said the elected government was determined to play a major role in safeguarding peace and prosperity both at home and abroad.
“We saw how confident Bangladesh was at the world forum,” Mahdi said.
He said the prime minister’s emphasis on Bangladesh’s dignity, confidence and identity had centred on the country’s interests, sovereignty and progress towards self-reliance.
‘Message Accepted Internationally’
Asked about the visit, Mahdi said Tarique had conveyed Bangladesh’s democratic progress and explained how the government’s election pledges would improve people’s lives, solve problems and build a self-reliant, modern Bangladesh.
He said the prime minister had also outlined domestic plans, programmes and policies for building a welfare-oriented, humane state, while setting out Bangladesh’s role in preserving global peace as a democratic and peace-loving country.
