Officials said the seized narcotics contained in 31 packages was valued at 150 million Indian rupees
Police said they arrested Colonel Ajay Chaudhury, Defence Wing Public Relations Officer attached to the 57th Mountain Division, when his three vehicle convoy tried to drive past a Manipur police check post at Pallet on the highway that connects Manipur capital Imphal with Moreh on the India-Burma border.
"When the police waved the convoy to stop, they did not and tried to drive past. That is when they were chased by police commandos based at the checkgate," a police official said.
Alongwith Colonel Ajay Chaudhury, police arrested Ngairakpam Brojendro Singh, an assistant manager with private airlines Indigo. A sepoy of the para-military Assam Rifles, R K Babloo was also arrested. The other three nabbed were the driver of the three vehicles in the convoy.
Allegations of some Indian army and para-military officials being involved in smuggling of high value narcotics on the India-Myanmar border have been raised by enforcement authorities.
In 1988, one Major Balbir Singh Sangha was arrested with 2.2 kilograms of 'Double Globe' Burmese heroin at Dimapur in the neighbouring state of Nagaland.
