Enamul Hoque Chowdhury is currently the acting editor of the newspaper owned by East West Media Group, a unit of Bashundhara Group.

The newspaper published a report, headlined “19 lakh fake drivers rule the highways” in August 2015 with the byline of Partha Sharothi Das.

Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah summoned both Chowdhury and Das on Monday.

Citing a 2015 statistics of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority or BRTA, the newspaper claimed there were more than 1.8 million drivers with no licence across the country.

The High Court took the report into cognisance and issued an interim rule ordering the confiscation of about 1.9 million ‘fake driver’s licences’.

The court also ordered legal action against the holders.

“It then directed the Daily Sun to file supporting documents to verify the assertions in the report but the newspaper has not complied with the order yet,” Deputy Attorney General Tapash Kumar Biswas told reporters.
