Dhaka, June 15 (bdnews24.com) — The husband of the Dhaka University teacher, who had allegedly beaten and bitten the wife, claims that the lady, Rumana Monzur, was having an extra-marital relationship with an Iranian man.
Hours after his arrest, sleuths took Hassan Syed to take questions from journalists on Wednesday at the Detective Branch's (DB) Minto Road headquarters.
Hassan said, "She had an [extra-marital] affair with an Iranian male during her stay in Canada for higher studies since August last year."
"I came to know about it when she returned on 5th of May," he said.
Rumana's husband went on, "I requested her to discontinue the relation with the Iranian guy and deleted the name of the Iranian man from her Facebook friends' list on 5th of June when she was in bathroom."
"Finding the Iranian guy's name deleted, she attacked me and we had a scuffle," he said.
"I lost my glasses and since I don't see well, she might have been hurt in the fight," Hassan claimed.
He also alleged that Rumana tried to kill him with sleeping pills. "I had to stay at the LabAid Hospital for two days that time."
DB deputy commissioner (south) Munirul Islam told bdnews24.com that they would take Hassan to court to take his remand for questioning.
The officer, however, did not say when he would be produced.
He was arrested around 2:15pm from a relative's residence at Mughda in the city, nine days after he allegedly tried to gouge eyes of his wife out.
Hassan also beat her severely and chewed off part of her nose, alleged Rumana's father at a press conference on Tuesday.
The allegedly tortured assistant professor of International Relations department was admitted to LabAid Specialised Hospital that afternoon.
Doctors said the tissues of the victim's eyes had got badly ruptured in the attack.
"Her eyes need multi-disciplinary treatment in a modern eye set-up," chief eye consultant at the hospital Dr Ansarul Huq said on Sunday and suggested that eye hospitals abroad could be an option.
Rumana, the mother of a daughter, flew to Chennai in India with her parents for treatment on Tuesday.
The High Court on Wednesday asked the government why Hassan, the lone accused in the case filed by the alleged victim's father with Dhanmondi Police Station, had not been arrested yet.
The court asked the investigation officer of the case, Dhanmondi Police Station officer-in-charge and Dhanmondi Circle assistant commissioner to appear before it at 10:30am on Thursday.
According to the case detail, after her arrival, Hassan stressed that Rumana did not return to Canada.
She was scheduled to return there to submit her thesis papers by October, it says.
"Hassan also beat her on 21st of May to prevent her from going to Canada again and the latest beating took place on 5th of June," it adds.

The DB deputy commissioner said two special teams were after Hassan since June 5.
"Raids in Chittagong and north Mughda were conducted simultaneously," he added.
Their relationship ages 16-17 years, Munirul said.
"The long-term relationship came to an end due to Rumana's nine-month living in Canada," he added.
