Local police chief Superintendent Mainul Haque said a counterterrorism unit team from Dhaka took position around a five-storey building at the city's Pikeparha early morning Saturday.

Counterterrorism Unit chief Moinirul Islam told bdnews24.com that the raid is being conducted upon information gleaned from a previously arrested operative of the banned group Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

bdnews24.com's Narayanganj correspondent reported from the scene of hearing gunshots after 9:30am.

"Police are approaching to enter the building," Narayanganj's Additional Superintendent of Police Faruk Hossain told reporter near the scene.

After the Gulshan and Sholakia attacks in July, police have been conducting regular search operations as well as on specific information across the country.

During one of these routine searches, a gunfight erupted in late July between police and suspected militants holed up in an apartment at Dhaka's Kalyanpur.

A SWAT team later stormed the apartment when nine suspected militants were gunned down.
