Patuakhali, Apr 12 (bdnews24.com) – Freedom fighter SM Monwara Monu breathed her last at 5am Sunday at Patuakhali General Hospital. She was 54.
Monu was admitted to hospital Saturday morning with diarrhoea and although she recovered from it she died from respiratory complications the next day.
She was a self-motivated social worker and an official of the cooperative society of Patuakhali Sadar.
Md Shahjahan Mia, state minister for religious affairs, Moshtaq Ahmed, municipality mayor, freedom fighters and people from all walks of life rushed to her home on Muktijhoddha road.
"She was a true patriot and a freedom fighter," the state minister said.
In 1971, Monu boldly fought at close quarters for nine months with her elder brother Sardar Abdur Rashid and younger sister SM Anwara Anu.
In 1997, she received innumerable awards and accolades including the gold medal as a female freedom fighter.
Her Namaz-e-janaja will take place at PDS ground after Asr prayers Sunday. She will be buried at the graveyard reserved for freedom fighters.
Different political, cultural and social organisations have condoled her death.
