Supreme Court's Registrar General Syed Aminul Islam said Justice Amin had undergone an open heart surgery at the Singapore General Hospital.
A second surgery was attempted early on Tuesday as post-operation bleeding continued, but the doctors could not save him, he said.
Justice Amin was sworn in as the 16th Chief Justice of Bangladesh on Jun 1, 2008 and retired on Dec 22, 2009.
He served as the country's top judge when the military-backed caretaker administration was in power.
Born on Dec 23, 1942, in Lakhsmipur, Justice Amin completed his Masters in History from the Dhaka University in 1963.
After completing his LLB in 1966, he joined the judicial service and served as a district and sessions judge.
In 1994, he was appointed a temporary judge for the High Court. Two years later, he was made permanent.
He was made an Appellate Division judge in July 2003.
Justice Amin, who also served as the chairman of the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission from 2004 to 2009, is survived by his wife and two sons.
