Two people have been killed and five others injured after a truck ploughed into a battery-run van in Faridpur’s Boalmari Upazila.
The incident occurred around 10:45pm on Friday in the Mujurdia area along the Majhkhanda-Bhatiapara regional road, according to Boalmari Police Station's Inspector (Investigation) Al-Amin Hossain.
The dead were identified as Biplob Kumar Saha, 55, and Narayan Chandra Saha, 50. Both were traders from the Satair Bazar area.
Citing locals, Inspector Al-Amin said the victims were returning home in a battery-run van after attending a religious event in Kadir village.
As the van reached in front of Mujurdia Kanakharadi Madrasa, a Faridpur-bound truck coming from the opposite direction rammed into it. The two men fell under the wheels and were crushed to death on the spot.
The injured -- Sanjoy Banik, Nepal Saha, Sujit Saha, Tuktuki and van driver Suman -- were rescued and taken to the Boalmari Upazila Health Complex.
Boalmari Fire Service Station Officer Md Royal Ahmed said firefighters recovered the bodies and the injured and took them to the health complex. The truck driver and his assistant fled, leaving the vehicle behind, which has since been handed over to police.
Al-Amin said the bodies were returned to the victims’ families later that night as they did not lodge any complaint over the incident.
