A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has prompted authorities to hoist Cautionary signal No. 3 at Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports.

Meteorologist Hafizur Rahman said on Monday the depression had formed over the west-central Bay and adjoining northwest Bay, near the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha.

It was moving west-northwest and could intensify further, he added.

The system has caused a steep pressure gradient over the northern Bay, with gusty or squally winds likely to sweep across coastal districts and seaports.

Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern and deep Bay have been instructed to remain close to shore and proceed cautiously until further notice, the Met Office said.
