A man has gone missing in a canal while a child drowned in a lake in Chattogram.

The young man was carried away by the current of the Jyeshthapura Bhandaljuri Canal in Boalkhali Upazila on Thursday.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, a three-year-old child drowned in the waters of a lake in Ward No. 2 of Dabua Union, Rauzan Upazila.

The missing man from Boalkhali has been identified as Didarul Alam Hridoy, 18; he is a resident of the East Jyeshthapura Guchchagram Ashrayan Project in the Upazila's Sripur-Kharandwip Union.

Meanwhile, the child who died in Raozan was Md Mostakim, the son of Md Parvez from that area.

Boalkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mehedi Hasan Faruk told bdnews24.com, "We received information around 11am that a young man named Didar has gone missing in the Bhandaljuri Canal in the Jyeshthapura area. A Fire Service team has also gone there to search for him."

According to locals, Didar worked as a labourer in the orchards on Karoldenga Hill. He was crossing the canal to reach the hill for work when he was swept away by the rushing mountain runoff.

They said that workers usually cross this section of the canal to reach the hill because the water level is normally low; however, during the monsoon season, the canal experiences heavy mountain runoff, and it was in such a surge that Didar was swept away.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday afternoon, the child died after falling into the waters of a wetland in Ward No. 2 of Dabua Union, Rauzan Upazila.

Raozan Police Station chief Saiful Islam told bdnews24.com that the child had been playing near the house in the afternoon when he fell into the waters of a lake. Family members eventually found the child after a search.

He was rescued and taken to the hospital, where the doctor pronounced him dead.
