Extended holiday for educational institutions during Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr

Government and private secondary and lower secondary schools will close after classes on Feb 27

Educational institutions across Bangladesh will close for over a month in celebration of the holy month of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.

Government and private secondary and lower secondary schools will close after classes on Thursday, Feb 27, while primary schools will shut down after classes on Tuesday, Feb 25.

Classes are scheduled to resume on Apr 7 for primary schools and Apr 9 for secondary and lower secondary schools.

Madrasa classes ended on Monday, with institutions reopening on Apr 8.

Meanwhile, technical education institutions will close after Thursday’s classes and reopen on Apr 6.

The same applies to government and private colleges, which will resume classes on Apr 6.

At the beginning of the year, separate holiday schedules were published by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the education ministry, and the Technical and Madrasa Education Division, confirming the closure dates.

According to the holiday calendar and academic schedule, government and private colleges will remain closed from Mar 2 to Apr 3 for Ramadan, Doljatra, Independence Day, Jumatul Wida, Shab-e-Qadr, Eid-ul-Fitr, and the summer vacation—a total of 25 days, excluding weekends.

Government and private secondary and lower secondary schools will observe holidays from Mar 2 to Apr 8 for the same occasions, amounting to 28 days excluding weekends.

Madrasas will be closed from Feb 25 to Apr 7, while technical education institutions will observe holidays from Mar 2 to Apr 5.

Primary schools will have the longest break, closing from Feb 26 to Apr 6 for Shivratri, Ramadan, Doljatra, Independence and National Day, the birth anniversary of Sri Sri Harichand Thakur, Shab-e-Qadr, Jumatul Wida, and Eid-ul-Fitr.

This totals a maximum of 28 consecutive days, excluding weekends.

“As per the announced holiday schedule, schools will close for Ramadan after Thursday’s classes. Whether a separate directive will be issued regarding this will be decided on Tuesday at the office,” Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, director of the secondary wing at the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, told bdnews24.com on Monday.

Md Mojibur Rahman, headteacher of BTCL Ideal School in Dhaka’s Moghbazar, told bdnews24.com on Monday: “According to the holiday schedule, the Ramadan break will start on Mar 2. However, in reality, schools will close after Thursday’s classes. Students will be informed about the holiday on Tuesday or Wednesday.”
