Massive numbers of BNP leaders and activists have gathered at Dhaka's Naya Paltan for a rally. The rally started in front of the party’s headquarters around 2:30pm on Tuesday to mark the ‘International Day of Democracy’. Before the start of the rally, artistes allied with the BNP gave a musical and dance performance.
The party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will preside over the event, while Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will give a speech as the event’s chief guest. As he did in the previous rally, the speech will be streamed virtually from London.
Tarique is expected to have some ‘new statements’ at the event, according to BNP Joint Secretary General Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel.
“This rally is a rally for democracy. The presence of 100,000 people shows how popular the nationalist power is with the people of Bangladesh.”
The main attraction at the event is Tarique’s speech, he said.
Prof AZM Zahid Hossain, a member of the BNP Standing Committee and rally organiser, said: "In addition to all Thanas and wards of the capital, leaders and activists from Dhaka’s neighbouring districts are also attending this rally.”
“You can see that there isn’t a hair’s breadth left at this rally for democracy. People are coming towards Naya Paltan like tidal water surging over a dam. Apart from the Dhaka metropolitan area, leaders, activists, and supporters from the neighbouring districts of Savar-Keraniganj, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Munshiganj, and Manikganj have come to this rally.
Apart from the rally in Dhaka, the BNP is also holding processions in major cities. This rally was supposed to be held last Sunday, but was postponed due to bad weather.
A huge stage has been set up in front of the central office for the rally. A big electronic screen has been installed for Tarique’s speech.
At least 150 megaphones have been set up from the Kakrail intersection to Fakirapul Bazar, with big-screen TV screens installed in different places.
Leaders and activists started streaming into Naya Paltan in small processions from 11:30am. Before 2:30pm, the road from Kakrail to Fakirapul junction was busy with the party’s loyalists.
They wore colourful caps and held national flags and party flags.
Traffic at Naya Paltan has been halted from noon for the event
Volunteer teams of the BNP metropolitan units and other organisations are working to maintain order in the assembly. Additional police have also been deployed at the Kakrail and Fakirapul intersections for security.
