An 80-year-old man has allegedly tried to bury his paralysed wife alive in their yard. A video of the incident has gone viral on Facebook.

The incident occurred in broad daylight around Friday noon in Khoshalpur Kanipara area of Kakilakura Union, said Sreebardi Police Station chief Anwar Zahid.

The woman, 70-year-old Khosheda Begum, has been bedridden for six years following paralysis. She is the wife of Khalilur Rahman, son of the late Johur Ali.

The video clip shows Khalilur dragging Khosheda from their home into the yard, where he had already dug a pit with a spade. He is seen placing her inside and attempting to cover her with soil. Khosheda screams for help, prompting Khalilur to slap her. Several bystanders, including the one filming, did not intervene.

Neighbours said Khosheda had received treatment for years but had seen no improvement. Recently, she had been denied proper care, and Khalil had grown increasingly frustrated. They believe prolonged stress and anger may have triggered his actions.

“Khalilur is not known as a bad man. He is usually cheerful, but his wife’s illness made him gloomy. I don’t understand why he did this,” neighbour Rahim Mia said.

Another neighbour, Sujon, claimed Khalilur had bought her a commode chair earlier that day but may have acted out of frustration when she failed to respond.

The video was reportedly filmed by their 19-year-old grandson, Khokon, and posted on Facebook, sparking outrage and debate.

After the footage surfaced, police visited the scene.

“We heard the matter was settled socially. If we receive a written complaint, legal action will be taken,” Zahid said.

Upazila administrator (UNO) Sheikh Jaber Ahmed said he was shocked by the video and pledged action under the law. Khalil has gone into hiding since the incident.
