Five arrested for ‘raping’ woman after tying up husband in Kushtia

Police say the victim was raped on her way home with her husband at night

A restaurant worker has been allegedly raped while her husband was tied up in Kushtia’s Bheramara Upazila. Police have arrested five people in connection with the incident.

Bheramara Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Rakibul Islam said they were arrested in a raid in the Moslempur and Shauladag areas of the Upazila after a case was filed on Saturday.

The arrested are Kalu Pramanik, 46, Murshid Sheikh, 45, Titu Mandal alias Tipu, 42, Ejazul, 42, and Rubel Ali, 24.

The allegation read, “The 24-year-old victim was returning home with her husband in a van after finishing work at a restaurant. When they reached Moslempur, a group of men stopped the van and dragged them into a nearby orchard.

“There, they tied the victim’s husband to a tree and took turns raping her. When she eventually fell ill, they fled, leaving the couple behind. After the incident was reported to police, officers arrived and rescued them from the scene.”

Police said they were taken to the Bheramara Upazila Health Complex for primary treatment, then taken to the police station.

The victim's husband filed a case accusing six people.

Bheramara Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Mizanur Rahman said no external wounds or signs of injury were found on her body. The woman was later advised to go to Kushtia General Hospital.

Kushtia General Hospital Resident Medical Officer Hossain Imam said the woman had not yet reached the hospital.

Rakibul said preparations are under way for the victim's medical examination.

He also claimed that the arrested people confessed to their involvement in the rape incident during the initial interrogation.
