Five people have died after a bus collided with a motorcycle before crashing into ditch in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila on the day of Eid-ul-Azha.
The accident occurred near Bedgram of the Dhaka-Khulna Highway around noon on Thursday, according to Md Habibullah, the superintendent of police for the Gopalganj district.
He added that two of the victims were riding the motorcycle, while the other three were passengers of the bus. The dead include a child and a pregnant woman.
The identities of the victims could not immediately be confirmed.
Several others were also injured in the crash.
Citing witnesses, police said a Pirojpur-bound Dola Paribahan bus arriving from Dhaka hit a recklessly driven motorcycle coming from the opposite direction as it reached the town's Bedgram.
The bus veered out of control and overturned on the road while the motorcycle was badly mangled.
Four people, including the two motorbike riders, died on the spot, while at least 25 others sustained injuries.
The injured were rushed to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital and Gopalganj General Hospital, where a 12-year-old child later died.
Eleven of the injured remain under treatment at hospital. The rest received first aid and were discharged.
