Three people have died after a microbus carrying passengers home for the Eid holidays veered out of control and crashed into a road divider on the Dhaka-Rangpur Highway in Bogura’s Sherpur, causing its gas cylinder to explode.
The incident occurred in the Chonka area of Bhabanipur Union around 7am on Wednesday, according to Sub-Inspector (SI) Noor Hossain of Sherpur Highway Police.
The vehicle was carrying 12 people, including the driver, according to the police and fire service. The nine others in the vehicle were burnt and injured in the accident.
The dead have been identified as Mominur Islam, 55, his sister Shiuli Begum, 45, and Md Tayeba, 15. They all hailed from Saluk Shahbag village in Rangpur’s Kaunia Upazila.
The bodies have been sent to the morgue at Bogura’s Shaheed Ziaur Medical College Hospital.
The injured have been identified as Fatema, 10, Shahidul, 40, Tousib, 30, Tasmia, 20, Helena, 60, Tariqul, 36, Fatema, 2, Arham, 7, and Hamim, 30. They have been admitted to the same hospital.
“Eleven passengers were taking a microbus from Dhaka to Rangpur for the Eid holidays,” according to Inspector Bakhtiar Uddin of the Sherpur Fire Service. “Along the way, the microbus crashed into the road divider and the gas cylinder exploded with a loud blast.”
“Within moments, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. We rushed to the scene when the incident was reported and brought the fire under control. But, unfortunately, one person died on the spot.”
Witnesses say the fire spread so quickly that none of the passengers had a chance to get out. The driver burnt to death inside the vehicle.
“One person died on the spot when the vehicle veered out of control and hit the road divider,” said Ibrahim Ali, chief of Sherpur Police Station. “One person died at the Sherpur Upazila Health Complex and another at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.”
Rokon Uddin, chief of the Sherpur Highway Police Camp, said: “The group had rented a microbus and was returning home to see their families for Eid. The accident occurred along the way.”
“The vehicle involved in the accident has been recovered. The bodies of the dead will be handed over to their families after legal procedures are completed.”
