Two people have been killed after a truck ran a pedestrian over before crashing into a three-wheeled passenger vehicle, locally called "Bhotbhoti", in Bogura's Sherpur Upazila.
The victims were identified as 52-year-old Harun-or-Rashid, the pedestrian, and 35-year-old Hanif Uddin, a labourer travelling on the three-wheeler.
At least 21 others were injured in the accident that occurred in the Ranbir Bala area along the Sherpur-Dhunat regional road on Friday, according to Sherpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Tofazzal Hossain.
Seven of them have been taken to the hospital in critical condition, though their identities have not yet been confirmed.
Aminul, a witness identified by a single name, said that a truck heading towards Dhunat ran over Hanif near the Bashir Pagla Mazar in Ranbir Bala and then crashed into the passenger-laden Bhotbhoti about 200 yards away. Both the truck and the three-wheeler overturned following the collision.
Hanif and Harun died on the spot.
Khannashashi Haran, one of the injured, said, "Seventeen women and five men from Jhajhar were travelling by Bhotbhoti to Kusumbi for potato harvesting when the truck hit us."
Sherpur Fire Service Wire House chief Bakhtiar Uddin said that emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and rushed the injured to hospitals.
Inspector Tofazzal said that the truck involved in the accident has been seized, though the driver fled immediately after the incident.
He added that some of the injured were sent to Bogura’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment and assured that legal action would be taken regarding the accident.
