The Election Commission’s door-to-door data collection drive to update the voter list is set to conclude on Monday.
The next stage—capturing photographs, fingerprints, and iris scans—will commence soon.
Despite the official conclusion of the home visits, eligible individuals who have not yet registered will still have the opportunity to enrol. The EC has stated that prospective voters can register directly at designated photo registration centres by filling out Form-2 and providing necessary documentation, photographs, and fingerprints.
Additionally, applicants may initiate the process by filling out Form-2 online through the commission’s website (www.nidw.gov.bd) before completing their registration in person with a printed copy of the form and the required documents.
Details on designated registration centres are available at the respective Upazila or Thana election offices.
Data collection is currently underway for individuals who will turn 18 in the coming year, i.e. by Jan 1, 2026.
The update process will also address several categories: those born on or before Jan 1, 2008, individuals previously excluded from the voter list, those who have passed away, and those who have relocated.
The EC initiated door-to-door data collection for voter list updates on Jan 20. Following the completion of data collection on Monday, the process will transition to photographing, fingerprinting, and iris scanning, which will begin on Feb 5 and continue until Apr 11.
The EC estimates that approximately 1.9 million eligible voters will be registered during this update. To support the effort, at least 65,000 individuals, including data collectors, have been deployed across the country.
The voter list update work is scheduled to be completed by June this year.
Speaking at a function at the Election Building on Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Nasir Uddin remarked: "We have planned for six months; it may take a bit more time or a little less. The target is to complete it within six months."
On Jan 2, the EC released the draft voter list for this year, which includes the names of 1,833,352 newly registered individuals. The final voter list published on Mar 2, 2024 contained over 121.8 million voters.
In this year's update, individuals who became eligible to vote on Jan 1, 2025, have been added to the list.
With the inclusion of new voters, the total number of voters in the country has reached 123,683,512. The final voter list will be published on Mar 2.
