Residents of a village in the haor area of Kishoreganj’s Austagram Upazila have beaten two people to death after they were detained for ‘stealing a buffalo’ and trying to escape by boat.
The incident occurred on the ground floor of Deoghar Government Primary School in the Upazila’s Deoghar Union at 7am on Saturday, according to Ruhul Amin, chief of Austagram Police Station.
The dead were identified as Shahjahan, 40, who hailed from Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar, and Nasir, 28, who hailed from Austagram’s Kagji village.
OC Amin said that locals allege the two had attempted to steal a buffalo from the home of one Hira Mia from Monoharpur village in Bangalpara Union early in the morning. A crowd then caught the two of them fleeing along the Ludda River on a boat with the buffalo.
“They were locked up on the ground floor of the Deoghar Government Primary School,” he said. “The two were killed on the spot when an agitated mob broke through the school gates and beat them severely.”
“A police patrol was sent to the scene to bring the situation under control when the incident was reported, but they were unable to do so. Later, Major Arifa Khatun came to the scene with army personnel and brought the situation under control.”
The bodies have been recovered and sent to the district headquarters for an autopsy, the OC said. Legal steps are being taken over the incident.
