A Mymensingh court has sentenced two brothers to death for the murder of a tenth-grade schoolboy Saikat Hasan Akash, who was killed in 2021 after his relationship with a girl was opposed by her family.

Mymensingh Additional District and Sessions Judge (Acting) Md Samsuddin delivered the verdict on Thursday afternoon, court police inspector Mostasirur Rahman confirmed.

The two condemned convicts are Nazmul Haque, 26, and Enamul Haque.

The court also fined each of them Tk 50,000.

The victim's father Ziaul Haque, 57, and uncle Julhas Uddin, 37, were sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment each.

They were also fined Tk 20,000 each, with an additional six months' imprisonment in default of payment.

Nazmul, Ziaul and Julhas were present in court when the verdict was announced.

Enamul, who also received the death sentence, remains absconding, the police inspector said.

All four are residents of Bhugli Nayapara village in Mymensingh Sadar Upazila.

According to the case documents, Akash was lured out by a girl on the night of May 19, 2021.

He was later killed by having his throat slit, and his body was buried.

Police recovered the body on May 21, two days after the murder.

The investigation found that Saikat, a student at Ashtadhar High School, had been in a romantic relationship with the daughter of a local union council member.

After the relationship became known, the girl's family opposed it.

Akash was then called to a location, where he was killed and buried.

The day after the murder, the girl's father Md Akram Hossain filed a murder case with Kotwali Model Police Station, naming 14 people as suspects.

Following the investigation, police submitted a chargesheet against four suspects to the court on Jan 14, 2022.
