Members of 13 organisations of employees and workers took out a protest procession from Nagar Bhaban in the city under the banner of ‘Dhaka South City Corporation Sramik-Karmachari Oikya Parishad’ at around 11am on Monday.
They later formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club.
Family members of the DSCC officer earlier alleged that several members of the Jatrabarhi police, including Sub-Inspector Arshad Hossain Akash, had beaten Bikash in the capital’s Mirhazaribagh.
Labour leader Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan told bdnews24.com during the Monday demonstrations: “Just six months ago, Motijheel police tortured DSCC engineer Abdul Mazed near Baitul Mukarram (National Mosque).”
“We condemn the incidents and demand punishment for those responsible,” he added.
Bikash’s wife Saraswati Das also joined the demonstrations.
“My husband was shifted to a ward from the ICU in LabAid Hospital yesterday (Sunday). He is still unable to speak,” she told bdnews24.com.
Additional police were deployed around the Press Club to avoid any untoward incident during the demonstrations.
Shahbagh Police Station OC Abu Bakar Siddiq said the peaceful programme of the workers did not cause the traffic any inconvenience.
After the family had accused the police of torturing Akash, officials of the force claimed that the incident was the result of some ‘misunderstanding’.
But witnesses said that SI Akash and his colleagues continued beating Bikash even after he had identified himself as a DSCC officer.
Faced with harsh criticism, Dhaka Metropolitan Police suspended the SI. A committee was also formed to look into the matter.
The incident occurred only six days after Mohammadpur police SI Masud Shikder allegedly beat up a Bangladesh Bank official while demanding that he pay him a hefty amount of money or face prosecution as a Yaba dealer and addict.
