Dhaka Central Jail security heightened, bamboos, tarpaulin used for hanging convicts taken inside

The Dhaka Central Jail official are yet to say whether death-row war crimes convict Mohammad Kamaruzzaman has sought presidential pardon, but security in front of the jail has been ratcheted up.

RAB and jail security officials formed a two-tier barricade in front of the jail on Friday evening.

 

Additional police personnel were also deployed.

 

The process to tighten security started when Senior Jail Superintendent Forman Ali entered the jail around 7:15pm.

 

Chawkbazar Police Station OC Azizul Haque said they were only following orders from top officials.

 

Later around 7:30pm, a rickshaw-van carrying at least eight bamboo poles and three large cartons was taken inside the jail.

 

An ambulance carrying a tarpaulin entered the jail around half an hour later.

 

A jail official said bamboos and tarpaulin were needed to cover the gallows in order to prevent people of adjacent buildings from watching the process of hanging.

A similar process was followed during the execution of war crimes convict Abdul Quader Molla.

 

A jail official, seeking anonymity, told bdnews24.com: “Everything is ready. We’ll be able to execute the (death) sentence once we get the order.”
