President Shahabuddin undergoes emergency heart procedure in UK

He seeks prayers from the nation while under close medical care

President Mohammad Shahabuddin, who is in the United Kingdom for medical treatment, has had a heart blockage detected and treated with angioplasty and stent placement.

His personal physician AKM Faizul Haque informed the Bangabhaban Press Office that the president is now in “stable and satisfactory condition”.

He said the procedure was carried out on Tuesday afternoon at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge under the supervision of interventional cardiologist Stephen Hooley.

During an angiogram, doctors identified a blockage in the heart and immediately performed angioplasty, inserting a stent.

The president is under close medical observation at the hospital. He has sought prayers from the people of the country for his recovery.

Earlier, in October 2023, he underwent open-heart surgery at the National University Hospital in Singapore.

He had since been receiving follow-up cardiac care at the Royal Papworth Hospital.

However, after the political change in Bangladesh in August 2024, he was unable to return for follow-up treatment for 26 months. He travelled to London on May 9 for the delayed medical check-up.

He is expected to return to Bangladesh on May 18 after completing his treatment.
