The Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam has expressed deep regret over the force's involvement in serious misconduct driven by party interests during the previous government.
Speaking to journalists after an event at the Metropolitan Police Headquarters in Shahjalal sub-city of Sylhet, he remarked that police are currently in a state of disarray.
“Their spirits have been broken by fear and anxiety. During the mass uprising, senior police officers gave orders to junior officers, leaving them vulnerable while they themselves fled."
The IGP said reviving the morale of the police force is now the biggest challenge, adding: “In the past, the police committed serious crimes to serve party interests, and for that, we are ashamed.”

In response to questions regarding extortion, threats, and attacks on businesses following Aug 5, he reassured the business community, saying: "If anyone comes to extort money from you, do not give in to them, and do not be afraid.”
“We are always with the business community. Police are working to ensure a safe environment for businesses to operate smoothly."
The IGP said a Police Reform Commission has been formed to restore public trust in the force.
“We have made specific recommendations to the commission, particularly highlighting that many police officers are working overtime without any allowance.”
He concluded, “Efforts are under way to address this issue and resolve their challenges to restore their morale.”
