A clash has broken out in two phases between activists of the Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir over programmes marking July Uprising Day at Barishal University.
The incident took place on the university campus around 10am on Wednesday.
Although both groups claimed that at least 20 people were injured, 10 were admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.
Each organisation blamed the other for the violence.
University Proctor Mehedi Hasan Sohag said, “There was a misunderstanding between the two sides. Both groups then attacked each other. We intervened to stop both sides. We were injured while trying to stop them.”
Those admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital were identified as Safwan, 21, Shifat, 27, Al Amin, 25, Helal, 26, Robiul, 23, Monirul Islam, 26, Hafiz, 23, Abdullah Al Baki, 24, Hridoy, 23, and Tarikul Islam, 24.
Tarikul Islam Azmain, joint general secretary of the university unit of JCD, alleged while receiving treatment at the hospital: “A peaceful rally was under way on the campus to mark July Mass Uprising Day when Chhatra Shibir entered the campus with outsiders in an attempt to create unrest.
“When we tried to stop them, Shibir activists attacked us with sticks and iron rods. Around 10 to 11 JCD leaders and activists were injured and admitted to hospital.”
Making a similar allegation, Hasibur Rahman Sifat, a student of the university and joint general secretary of the JCD unit, said: “When Shibir entered the campus with outsiders during the programme, they were asked not to bring out a procession. Shibir activists then attacked us, leaving 10 to 12 JCD leaders and activists injured.”
Mohammad Al Amin, who identified himself as a Chhatra Shibir activist and was receiving treatment at the hospital, alleged: “It was a simple procession to commemorate the martyrs of the July Uprising. Towards the end of the procession, Chhatra Dal suddenly attacked us. This led to a prolonged scuffle and a heated exchange between the two sides.”
“At that point, the vice-chancellor, the proctor and several teachers came and tried to stop the clash. Then Monirul Islam, the president of the university unit of Shibir, was struck from behind. When I went forward to protect him, I was also assaulted.”
He said they later went to the vice-chancellor’s office. From there, the proctor took them to the ground floor of the administrative building to take them to the medical centre.
“Right in front of the proctor, we suffered a second round of attacks,” Al Amin alleged.
Asked about allegations that outsiders had joined the Shibir procession and that Shibir had launched the attack, Al Amin said: “Some of our leaders and activists who were around the campus may have joined the procession. Many others were standing by the roadside. They were also rounded up and beaten.”
He claimed that nine to 10 Shibir activists were injured in the attack by Chhatra Dal.
